Amazing Grace

Week 2 - How Sweet the Sound

Message Notes

Amazing Grace

Written in 1773 by John Newton

Popularized in the 1800’s in the American South with the tune “New Britain”.

Key Passage: Ephesians 2:1-9

You were dead.

“As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins… All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.” Ephesians 2:1,3

But God made you alive.

“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions…” Ephesians 2:4-5

It is by grace you have been saved.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

Grace is not based on your goodness, but Christ’s perfect sacrifice.

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found;

Was blind, but now I see.

Conclusion:

  • God offers his grace to us through his Son Jesus as a free gift.
  • There is nothing we do for God to love us more and nothing for God to love us less.
